In 2001, Stephen graduated from the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver, where he directed several short films, including WHY CAN'T I HAVE SOME? and ON SPECIAL, which are currently in rotation on Movieola and The Movie Network in Canada. While cutting an ultra-low budget feature called TREASURE MOUNTAIN, Stephen discovered a passion for structure and storytelling, which led him to study film editing at the Canadian Film Centre in Toronto. There, he honed his lyrical editing style under the watchful eye of master editor Antony Gibbs (FIDDLER ON THE ROOF, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, ROLLERBALL, DUNE, RONIN) and also picked up some directing tips from guests David Cronenberg, Mary Herron, Mike Figgis, and Norman Jewison. After graduating from the Canadian Film Centre, Stephen edited many award-winning short films, including the festival favorites CONGRATULATIONS DAISY GRAHAM, CAN YOU WAVE BYE BYE?, WHITE OUT, TERMINAL VENUS, BERLIN and TROLL CONCERTO, all of which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival. He also worked extensively in television, editing the Gemini Award winning comedy THREE CHORDS FROM THE TRUTH, THE SMART WOMAN SURVIVAL GUIDE, and THE WILKINSONS. After participating in the 2008 Talent Campus at the Berlin Film Festival, Stephen worked with Kevin Schjerning to edit PROM NIGHT IN MISSISSIPPI (Paul Saltzman), a documentary starring Morgan Freeman. Prom Night premiered at Sundance, got picked up by HBO, and recently screened at the White House in Washington DC. Stephen then edited THE WILD HUNT (TVA Films), a thriller by Alexandre Franchi that won Best Canadian First Feature at the Toronto International Film Festival, and GROWN UP MOVIE STAR (Mongrel Media), a touching family drama by Adriana Maggs. GUMS also premiered at Sundance, where lead actress Tatiana Maslany won Best Breakout Performance. Stephen also found time to direct his fifth short film entitled THE TWILIGHT EXPRESS, which recently premiered at the Montreal World Film Festival. Stephen recently edited 11 episodes for the hit series TODD AND THE BOOK OF PURE EVIL, which airs to glowing reviews on the Space Network in Canada, FearNet in the States, and Sy Fy in Britain. He also traveled to Sri Lanka where he edited the epic Action/Romance MATHA, which tells the story of two Tamil lovers trying to survive in the final days of the Sri Lankan Civil War. He is currently developing a feature project and a TV series. Stephen is the proud owner of three passports (Canadian, American and British) and hopes to continue his filmmaking career around the world. Click here to see Stephen's Filmography |
